Dribble, Shoot, Score By Larissa Lucas Managing Editor
Although they have faced some pretty good teams this year, the girls’ basketball teams, led by Mrs. Hewitt, are all off to a great start. The Varsity is 2-2 in district play, the JV is 4-0 in district play, and the sixth grade team is 3-0 in district play. They are looking forward to improving their skills and continuing their season after the Christmas break. Make sure you come out and support our Lady Saints!
Passing the Second Quarter By Elise DeGeeter Photo Editor
During this past quarter, the third through eighth grade students played volleyball and soccer in P.E. In soccer, they worked on passing, throw ins, and kicking. Fifth grader Ana Bella Celma said, “My favorite thing about soccer is the games.” In volleyball, they worked on bumping, setting, spiking, and serving. Meanwhile, in Kindergarten through second grade, the students worked on underhand and overhand throwing. Second grader Dylan Courtney said, “It was easy to throw the ball after I practiced.”
During the week of Halloween, the students went trick-or-treating in P.E. Instead of trick-or-treating for candy, they trick-or-treated for exercises. They also played graveyard ball where each of the students had a tombstone which was a bowling pin. If their bowling pin was knocked down they had to “rest in peace” for thirty seconds before rejoining the game. During middle school exam week, the students will be doing “mini unique units.” All in all, P.E. had a great year in 2015!
Lots of Baskets By Elise DeGeeter Photo Editor
WHCSA basketball has been a great success so far. One 177 students signed up for basketball, and 22 teams have been made. The teams have already started practice, and their games begin on January 16 and last until March 5.
This year to help the coaches teach the students sportsmanship and skills, P.E. and middle school boys’ basketball coach, Coach Hertlein, attended the demonstration meeting for volunteer coaches. He gave the coaches many skills to work on and drills to use at practice, and he even offered his assistance at practices. The coaches have already begun using these drills to help in coaching their players.
Some upcoming sports in WHCSA are baseball, softball, and volleyball. Opening registration dates will be announced in mid-January for these sports. It should be a great season!
