HOUSTON- The St. John Paul II (StJPII) Robotics teams will be competing in the FIRST LEGO LEAGUE championship tournament on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the British International School of Houston.
The Robotics program at FIRST LEGO LEAGUE challenges students to think like scientists and engineers to solve a real-world problem by building, testing, and programming a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology around a central theme. The 2017-2018 them is Hydrodynamics. Teams of up to ten children, under the guidance of at least two adult coaches, participate in a challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field, developing a solution to a problem they have identified, all guided by the FIRST LEGO League Core Values.
StJPII AWEBOTS Robotics team is encouraging students to conserve water and return all water molecules to the water cycle by discarding water from their water bottles before putting them in the recycle bins. The team hopes to form new positive habits regarding water conservation that the students can share at home and beyond. Leaving caps on bottles traps water molecules and keeps them out of the water cycle for a long time. The team points out that the earth needs all the water molecules it can get.
StJPII’s second team, Robokids, is also competing on Saturday. Both teams advanced to the championship after competing in the Spectrum FLL Qualifying tournament held at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in December.
